Maurizio Pollini has earned a magisterial reputation with powerful playing of the highest technical order allied with fierce intellect and integrity. His Debussy Preludes have many of the strengths one might expect and one of them is, well, strength. The two "wind" preludes, "The Wind on the Plain" and "What the West Wind Has Seen" will blow you right out of your seat and send you scurrying for your hat, while the ocean's parting in "The Engulfed Cathedral" is truly awe-inspiring. And he is not one to wallow in the quieter music--his "Footprints in the Snow" are empty spaces not unduly filled with sadness, and while "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" must be very pretty (or have very nice hair), he's not going to spend all day thinking about her. These are commanding performances that offer a valid, unsentimental view of Debussy, underlining the fact that, although he is often labeled an impressionist and a maker of lovely tunes and translucent textures, his music, like his piano, is strung with steel and capable of astonishing power.
