The only reservations I have about this disk is the way that Pollini treats the fast semiquaver passeges in op.53. He skims over them with nonchelance, as though they are extended trills rather than real medlodic passages. Apart from this the playing is just superb. He outdoes his rivals with the sheer sophistication of his approach and the very relaxed, perfectly weighted technique which enables the production of a wonderful tone. Not for him is the rather excessive showmanship of Kovacevich or the more weighty-sounding ponderousness of Brendel. Beethoven alone is enough for Pollini.
