    This dazzlingly fresh interpretation from Chailly, Alagna and Gheorghiu with Milan's famous La Scala opera orchestra promises to be the finest recording available since the Pavarotti, Freni, Karajan set. This is the first studio recording of the new critical edition, edited from original sources by Francesco Degrada. Anyone who loves this opera should not hesitate.

    Impoverished artists and their eccentric ways were a popular fascination in the 19th century, favorite haunts like the Latin Quarter of Paris and New York's Greenwich Village became tourist attractions and Henri Murger's novel 'Scenes de la vie de Boheme,' with its ultra-romantic portrayal of poets and painters cadging drinks and starving in their garrets was turned into one of the most beloved of all operas, Puccini's 'La Boh?me.'
    This production would seem destined to become a classic; it features the incomparable soprano Angela Gheorghiu as the ill-fated Mimi, tenor Roberto Alagna as her love, the poet Rodolfo, and the magnificent baritone Simon Keenlyside as Rudolfo's friend, the painter Marcello. Glowing around them are the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro La Scala, playing with their unique, idiomatic authority under Riccardo Chailly and recorded in the Decca tradition, with sumptuous detail and a spectacular sense of space.
